Adobe brick is one of the oldest types of building bricks used for the construction of buildings for various purposes already at least from 5 to 4 millennia BC. Constructions from adobe are still widespread in rural areas in southern Russia, the Caucasus, and Ukraine. The simplicity of manufacture combined with good performance makes this material attractive enough for potential developers primarily in individual construction.

The word saman is a Turkic word translated as straw.

Adobe brick is made from a mixture of clay and sand with the addition of hay, straw, chaff, wood shavings, bones - waste of flax and hemp, moss and other fibrous materials up to 10 cm long. Often, cow or horse manure is also added to this mixture. increasing its ductility.

The composition of the mixture for the manufacture of adobe bricks is selected as follows. Clay should be either oily, that is, with a sand content of 2 to 3% or medium, with a sand content of about 15%. Skinny clay is not suitable for bricks, since in this case they will be fragile, they will crumble.

Crushed stone, gravel, expanded clay can be used as additives to reduce sludge. To increase water resistance and increase strength, cement and lime can be added to the mixture. In this case, the hardening speed will increase simultaneously. As plasticizers, liquid glass, casein, bone glue, slurry, etc. can be added.

To form a brick from the boards, boxes without the bottom of the required size are hammered together. Work is carried out on a prepared flat site under a canopy to protect products in case of rain. The walls of the box are moistened with water and sprinkled with chaff (waste obtained from youth), then filled with the prepared mixture, rammed in the form, cut off the excess and proceed to the manufacture of the next brick.

After preliminary drying for three days, the bricks are laid on the side face so that there are sufficient ventilation gaps between them, and they are dried for another 3 to 7 days. The fact that the manufacture of adobe brick occurs without subsequent firing greatly facilitates its production, makes it possible to produce such bricks in artisanal conditions. In particular, this is one of the most important reasons for the widespread construction of adobe for millennia, especially in the steppe regions.

The density of adobe bricks, depending on the composition of the mixture, the number of light aggregates can be from 500 to 1900 kg / m3. Their compressive strength is 10 - 50 kg / cm2, which is quite enough for low-rise construction. If you liked this write-up and you would like to acquire far more information to find out more.
